Bradlee Ryall Golf Academy
What a fantastic time! The amazing instructors at Ryall Golf were so amazing and patient in helping us learn and develope golfing techniques. Each delegate not only left there with new skills, but also arm sleeves which were kindly donated by Swing Junior Golf Apperal – these really helped protect us all from skin damage and unwanted tans before the pageant 🙂 Bradlee continued his generosity through providing lunch at Iggy’s. The food was absolutely unbelievable! Where do I even begin? The generosity by the organizers allowed each delegate to go on a shopping spree all over the mall! I could not believe how many stores there were in the shopping centre – nothing quite like it back in BC! Not only were we all able to buy lunch in the food court, but we also had money to buy more. There were also vouchers in our bags for Cinnabon and Boston Pizza which came in handy 🙂 my favourite purchase of the day had so be my baby pink Guess purse! Thanks again for the great trip!

I am back with the exciting news that I have completed my second blog assignment and created my own Miss Teenage Canada Logo!
There were so many ideas to put down into one logo but as elegance has it, the most beautiful things are simple!
After much anticipation and hard work (it is very challenging finding a website that will let you make a logo the way you want it!!), my new and improved Miss Teenage Canada Logo is complete!!

Hello and welcome to my first blog assignment!!!
When people ask “why should I visit Delta, B.C.?” the real question should be “why shouldn’t I?” as describing the non-existent flaws of Delta would be easier than listing off all the wonderful beauties.
Here in Delta, there are endless attraction that bring families from all over the lower mainland on different occasions. Rather than rattling off just one attraction, I will be providing one for every occasion and season that Delta accommodates.
From all ages and interests, Delta is home to the Ladner May Days Festival every year! This event holds festivities for everyone including (but not limited to) face painting, book sales, palm reading, parades, carnival rides, live music and food decorating contests! This happens annually in the heart of Ladner (one of the cutest villages in all of BC in my humble opinion:)).
Along with the season, Ladner springs into the world with flourishing fashion stores and bakeries – you cannot walk through Ladner without being overcome with the smell of delicious goodies from local home-style bakeries! If you are in town, coming to Ladner even just for a bite is worth it!
THE BEACHES!!! I cannot explain enough how amazing the tides and beaches of Delta are. South Delta is home to two of the most breath taking views in all of British Columbia. To the east, Tsawwassen (yes, it is pronounced how it is spelt), is home to Centennial Beach, and the west coast beauty is seen in Tsawwassen Beach.
Centennial Beach is home to some of Canada’s famous wild life niches. Here, there are areas of sighting along the dyke that are off limits to on-foot-walkers due to the biodiverse habitats in the water, wet lands and greenery. Along the Dyke there are many other trails that can be ventured on foot or bike. My personal favourite is Raptor Trail, where my friends and I ride our bikes almost every week!
Additionally, at the south end of the trails, the famous Centennial Beach Cafe is located on the beach! Some of my favourite childhood memories consist of playing with my dog, Pepper, and my sisters in the park and tide. One of the most unique parts of this beach is that in low tide, you can walk a mile into Boundary Bay waterbody – and even in high tide, you can walk almost half a mile in water that will only go up to your hips! Some of my favourite pastimes in Delta have been on this beach and personal fun fact: my best friend, Kaitlin, and I studies for our Biology 11 Taxonomy final exam partially by spending time on the shoreline and identifying crabs, jellyfish, sea urchins, and every other type of wildlife around us into their appropriate Phylums!! #HappyAsAMollusca <3 geological fun fact: this beach shares a boarder with the United States of America!!!! centennial beach fun fact: THERE IS A CLEAR VIEW OF MOUNT BAKER FROM THE BEACH!!! – absolutely breath taking!
Tsawwassen Beach has beauty that can quite literally be seen from a mile away. The Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal is located about a mile out in the Salish Sea, where ferry boats dock and load passengers going to the islands! Even standing on a ferry boat, the Tsawwassen Beach looks absolutely radiating. On the shore of this beach you will find activities such as paddle boarding, sailing, kayaking and beach volley ball. Wither you come to Delta for a swim, sport, or tan, you will never leave disappointed!
When the cold breeze starts to roll around, Delta offers a copious range of outdoor and indoor activities that will keep you warm. Prominently, Delta is known for it’s many golf courses and outdoor parks. Surely, if you are looking for leisurely activities such as hiking or a friendly sport, you must come to Delta.
Deas Island is one of British Columbia’s most beautiful Regional Parks. I remember when I was in grade 3 and my school went on a field trip to conserve biodiversity in the wetlands and I was, and still am astonished by the beauty every time I am there. Deas Island is open year round, but as the leaves fall, Deas Island glows with radiant oranges and yellows. A simple walk through the trails and breathing in the fresh air is like placing yourself in a magical land. The breeze through the trees and the song of the birds will forever be remembered in your mind as one of your most calming and refreshing moment if you get a chance to visit this miraculous spot!
Let it snow in Delta! Ever since I could walk, my family and I would come to Diefenbaker Park in South Delta for some quality Canadian Tobogganing! Come December, the park is covered in a white fluffy blanket of snow. This large park is the perfect spot for a good snowball-fight, or a race down one of the steep hills which will defiantly get you in the holiday spirit!! The park is annually flocked with children of all ages running around in snowsuits and playing their favourite winter games – a sight sure to warm your soul <3
If only there were most seasons to show the wonders of Delta, British Columbia. The endless festivities and sights to visit in Delta are 100% worth the visit, regardless of who you are, or where you come from. If you are visiting with you friends or family, you will need be bored in this friendly region.
I love every part of God’s Green Earth and I feel absolutely blessed every day that I wake up where I am. Being in such a fantastic place motivates me everyday to challenge myself in making it that much better through acts of goodwill.
I strongly insist you come to Delta! The beauty and radiance of it all will astonish you and leave you breathless <3

Seems like forever since I’ve made one of these but I am as of right now, back on track!
So Delta weather has been beautiful for the past week, however has recently gone darker and wetter, so it feels like the right time to focus on the positives! Seeing how weather is not the only thing in life that may bring someone down, other stresses and misshapes may misdirect you from seeing the most important things in life. When this happens, just remember how-to stay positive!!
1 – Look at where you live…
Canada….how much better can it get? My Socials Studies 11 teacher used to tell me that “we have all won the lottery of life by living in Canada” and every word of that is true! Here, we are free to believe what we believe in, love who we love, express ourselves to our hearts contempt, and study what we are passionate about. Your dreams and aspirations are not limited by where you come from in Canada as it embraces endless variations of ethnicities, beliefs and passions. To make things even better….this place is BEAUTIFUL!! Mountains, Oceans, valleys, canyons, islands and parries – there is a place for everyone in Canada! A hike in the clean air with fresh water running down mountains takes you away from any stress and allows you to focus on what really matters 🙂
2 – good company
Who doesn’t love a good friend? Keeping good company is essential to staying positive. Friends are the ones you can rely on, regardless of how ridiculous your crisis may be. Spending time with a dear friend or loved one reminds us all that we are loved and cared about. May it be playing basket ball in your friends alley, swimming in the ocean, exploring your town on bikes, or even taking it easy while watching a movie, having good company will always help brighten your life. Allowing yourself to talk and spend quality time with an old friend can make the biggest difference. Allow yourself to be open and 100% honest with yourself and your friends – after all it is the best medicine for the soul!
3 – do you
If there is something that you want to do….do it! If it will make you happy (and it’s not harming anyone!!!!!) then do what makes you thrive! If you feel passionate about something and have always had this itch to try something new out, remember that there are no limits to how much you have achieve! For instance, as a little girl I have always admired the beautiful pageant ladies and as I grew up, I became aware that I could potentially become one! This thought occurred to me as I first heard of the opportunity last year, but resisted because of the fear of letting a younger version of myself down. Come December 2015, I thought back to my fathers words of success and decided to let myself discover my potential! I stick by my decision and leaps of faith like that stay with my every day as a reminder to stay positive because even YOU can surprise yourself!
4 – Appreciate the little things
Remember those moments that made you smile, even if they seem as insignificant as a late night infomercial. Little bits of laughter are easy to breeze lever, but sometimes remembering them can perk up your day. Besides….who doesn’t love a 5 minute video on “the wonders of a Sham-Wow” (good for a laugh!)
5 – YOU ARE LOVED
This.is.so.important!!!! You must remember this in times of doubt and negativity! Despite how low you feel, knowing that there is someone who loves you unconditionally can help you get out of whatever slump you may be in! It could be the love of a sibling, friend, family member, pet, or God. What ever overwhelms your heart and allows you to feel love is never wrong. The purest of love I find comes from the people who know me the best and someones a friendly self-reminder is all you need to tough out the hard times 🙂
6 – save time for yourself
This time is designated for you to relax and be yourself. Go for a walk, relax by the TV, sing in the shower, have a 1-person-party while getting ready in the morning (we have all done this don’t lie!!). Letting yourself be at peace not only calms your nerves, but also delivers the reminder to sometimes stop worrying about the world for just 15 minutes and asses yourself. We, as humans, are always inevitably changing mentally. Checking up on yourself can seem like an unnecessary precaution, but I promise you will never regret slowing down your busy day to make sure you are in tip-top condition. After all, mental health is just as important and physical health!
7 – GO TO BED
I hate to admit it…but alas it is true. Years of our parents telling us to ‘go to bed’ actually may help. The more sleep the better you will feel in the morning – guarantee! Sleeping is the multi-purpose-all-surface-cleaner of remedies: have a headache? – nap. Got the blues? – nap time. Sore muscles? – goodnight. Disappointed about the end of Pretty Little Liars? – Zzzzzz (seriously though!!) Nothing beats a goodnight sleep! You will wake up feeling refreshed and ready for anything to come your way.
8 – comfort food
Sometimes satisfying that all-day craving for avocados-on-toast is all you need to make your day that much better!
9 – be your own hero
If something is not going the way you wish it would, do not be afraid to take matters into your own hands. You are capable of anything, even saving the day from a potential bad day. Turn your day into a better one by assessing and addressing the problem appropriately. You are SuperWoman…do not let anyone tell you differently!!
10 – find things to love about yourself
Not one person on this Earth is the same and discovering and embracing your individual beauty can really change your perspective. Instead of looking in the mirror and focusing on your so-called ‘flaws’, think of all the things that make you special and your own person. The way you look does not define you as a person – this can easily get lost in translation when you fixate on self deprecating thoughts. I truly believe that the most beautiful thing about a person is their smile because it is the only way the soul can be expressed simply. We should all take a hint from Annie the Musical because “you’re never fully dressed without a smiiiillleeee” 🙂
Remember these things when you are feeling less than happy and it will brighten your day! You are beautiful and loved and capable of anything and sometimes we just need to be reminded <3

With the official start of summer yesterday, there seem to be more and more things to be grateful for! This had be thinking and thus triggered my response to start my second series of all the things in life that everyone can be grateful for! My hope for these blogs are to elaborate on the gratitude we sometimes take for granted and focus more on what really matters. To kick start this series off, I felt it only appropriate to talk about our parents due to Father’s Day being last Sunday. So without further ado — appreciation post #1!!!
Despite inevitable heartache, disappointment and turmoil that is sometimes thrown into life, your parents are the ones who stick by you and pull you out of your slump. It is sometimes harder to recognize this because they have been doing this their whole lives, and it has brome second nature to put you before themselves. This kind of selflessness and unconditional love is truly a blessing that needs to be celebrated more.
My mother is defiantly the most inspirational woman in my life. Through my life, there have been times where I have failed to see my true potential, and in those times my mother has always been there to set me straight. She inspires me everyday by how she never turns down a challenge and makes constant sacrifices to make my life better. To elaborate, wither it be picking you up from school, to driving you to dance, or being there for you when you score your first goal, mothers always want to see their child succeed. I think it is safe to say that 99.9% of our achievements and moral values come through what our mothers have taught us in how to believe in ourselves – well at least I know that is true in my heart!
As a young girl, I had high hopes and dreams of one day taking the stage on broadway, however, I was incredibly shy. At the age of 5 I was the silly youngest daughter in the family, but I would tend to hide behind my sisters and parents when facing new people and challenges. By the time I was 10, my aspirations of working towards my childhood goals have been introduced through the audition notice for my school play. I was over joyed that I could finally audition and “make it big”. I remember clearly standing on stage and singing “my favourite things” from the sound of music and forgetting the second verse because I was so nervous. Consequently, I landed a role in the play where I had a single line! (I still remember it!) I came home after getting my role and told my mom how disappointed I was in myself and she simple laughed and smiled and told me “there are no small roles, just small actors”. From that moment until closing night, I had practiced my one line until I perfected it…and then over perfected it….but I never let my spirit be dampened by my role because of my mothers support. I have never forgotten her wisdom and I have applied it to many areas in my life which have implied areas of a ‘smaller role’ and I have approached each event in the same way: giving it 110%. Although my aspirations have changed from broadway star to lawyer (or paediatric surgeon!?!), my morals and standards in respect to situations have been forever changed for the better because of my mother!
Through the rocky roads of life, father’s will always be there to help their little girls up when they stumble. For this, it is easy to forget all the little times our dads have brushed the dirt off our shoulders and kept us motivated. Personally, I have been blessed to have very special connections with both my dad and step-father. Each man has played a vital role in helping me become who I am. There will always be times when we all feel drained and like the world is falling from around us, and growing up I occasionally felt this way and I would always turn to my dad.
My dad has been my best friend and has listened to every problem, heartbreak, and petter problem that I have been faced with. Sometimes when life gets overwhelming, I tell him how I just want to give up and much like me mother, he tells me something that has become part of who I am. The saying that I live by and always remember when I feel that I am at my lowest are the words “I am not a failure if I don’t make it, I am a success because I tried”. These words were written on a pink slip of paper by my father when he was 18 years old and he put it on the fridge when I was little. Now, my mother has passed it down to me and I carry it with me as my most valuable possession.
My step-father has also given me endless support as he treats me like his own daughter. My step-dad has shown up to every single one of my theatre performances (every…single..one!!!) and has always cheered the loudest.
He has taught me that family does not always mean just the people you have grown up with, but also the people you meet along the way. My step-dad came into my life 10 years ago and I cannot picture my life without him. Even though he has his own sons, he has welcomed my sisters and I into his heart so effortlessly and there is defiantly a lesson to be learned from him. I will always know to be willing and ready to open myself to new situations the way he has opened himself to my mother and sisters! I think there are all times when we can relate to how important our fathers are and for that, it helps to take a step back and remember how lucky we all are for having such amazing people in our lives!
The lessons our parents have graced us with are things we will never be able to repay in the same way. Because of this, the gratitude we feel can be hard to express, however a random hug never hurt 🙂
To all parents and parent figures out there, THANK YOU!! One day of gratitude in may and june cannot do you enough justice! We, your children love you so much!

So now, remember all the times you have felt the love of your family and give someone you love a hug and tell them that you appreciate them!!

INTRODUCING THE “HOW-TO” SERIES!!! I am pleased to announce that I will be adding on to this series in easy how-to methods on different topics! So without further ado, the first edition “How-To Stay Active” 🙂
With summer upon us, it is easy to get caught up with sating in doors to watch endless episodes of Grey’s Anatomy with a slight crack of the window open so you can arguably state you got “fresh air”. HOWEVER, just because exams are done and we feel we deserve some ‘down time’ – we shouldn’t always interoperate that as ‘lie-down-and-take-a-nap time’.
The reality is, there is a lot to be said about the dramatic physical and physiological benefits that exercise has – and the best part…it doesn’t have to be ‘hard’. Over the years, I have tested and proven this through the various actives that I take part in on a regular basis which leave me feeling both energized and productive! I will admit, some times I don’t feel like running because its “too boring”, however, there are so many alternatives to turn to which suit every kind of mood I’m in, and here are just a few of them:
Peaceful – Sometimes you just want to go out, enjoy the fresh air and take it easy. This can easily be accomplished while getting a little exercise in which Paddle Boarding. Admittedly, I have found myself wanting a more peaceful approach after a long day at school or rehearsal and paddle boarding has always been my go-to! Not only does paddle boarding help de-stressing, but it is also so much fun! My personal favourite place to do this is in Delta, on either Centennial Beach (East – to see the sun rise early in the morning), or English Bluff (West – to see the sun set later on). The best thing about these places is that when the tide is in, you can paddle board a mile out with only 4 feet of water under you! Peaceful is the way you will be feeling on the board and contempt is the add on you will experience after. Additionally, if you want to challenge yourself, stand-up paddle board-yoga is a way to enhance your exercise! Albeit, it does take some practice to get your balance, however it is a win-win situation: you either perfect your stance on the first try, or fall in and get refreshed!
Focused – If you’re in a mood where you’re craving to throw yourself into and give it your all, Pilates is for you! Your corresponding mood with help you perfect the motions and take your time to complete. I know the sounds of actually getting-up-and-doing-pilates may seem intimidating, but the truth is you can do Pilates anywhere, anytime!!!! Many people use big machines, but in all honesty you just need a mat (or a towel if nothing else!). There are so many exercises online that are really easy to follow! This is especially good if you’re in the mood to take a break from a big project to re-boost yourself full of energy – you’ll only need 30 minutes!!
Adventurous – Often there are times I find myself at home wishing for adventure. Most time this is due to an inspiration from a book, or possibly the story of a friend, nevertheless the best way to get your fix of adventure is through riding a bike. Exploration does not always have to mean going on a deep sea adventure of sorts, however can be as simple as taking a bike and exploring your city! If there is one thing I have found out from this, it is that there is never nothing going on. You will discover things about your town that comes from only local knowledge and from the willingness to stay active. This is also great if you and your friend don’t know what to do on a beautiful day! If you are feeling up to it, you could even take your bike to a local trial and cover less familiar ground with the same outcome which will leave you fulfilled and refreshed!
Calm – Of course, when you feel as if all you want is a big breath of fresh air and to feel your heart beat, jogging will never fail you! I have always found jogging to put me in a place of satisfaction because there is no real standards for it other than ‘a self set pace’. There are no expectations to live up to so you can remain in a calm state by achieving your desires while staying calm. Jogging allows yourself to stop focusing on yourself and to look around at the world and appreciate the things you might take for granted in bust day-to-day life. Additionally, you can do this activity either by yourself, or with a friend! When I feel like getting active and wanting to be social I often go jogging with my sisters or neighbour! Whenever your are in doubt, jogging will never let you down as long as you have a pair of shoes and the desire to get moving 🙂
And there you have it – an activity for any mood! Getting exercise does not have to be an epidemic, but rather something you do because you simple can! If you are alive and can turn oxygen into carbon dioxide, you already have a good enough reason to stay active. There does not have to be any pressure in setting goals or working towards a ‘bikini body’ because quiet honestly there is only one step in achieving that — step 1: put on bikini — and you’re all set 🙂 Staying active should simply be a way for you to feel better both physically and psychologically with no negative results and have fun doing it!
My dad used to point out the people jogging in the rain and say “why do you think those people are putting themselves through that” and when I was little I would say “I don’t know”. My dad would then tell me it is because they love the rush of doing what they love and the way they feel after. None of this made sense to me until I climbed Grouse Mountain with my dad when I was 8 years old. During the climb I grew tired and sore, however I never realized until after because of how amazing the journey was!
So now I urge you to stay active with whatever mood you’re in! I promise you, you will not regret it!! 🙂

I am so excited to share the past week with you! With the nationals and university fast approaching, I have had some personal, educational, and pageant related milestones!
First, I graduated from High School!! After spending 5 years at my school, I have grown in faith, friendship, and intellect. I am pleased to say that I have not only graduated with honours, but that I have graduated from the school with the 2nd highest academic average in all of British Columbia! My alma mater, Little Flower Academy, has been a place where I have discovered aspect of my passions with freedom and openness and I will be sad not to see all the friendly faces in the hallway. However, I am overjoyed by the memories of countless laughs, life lessons, and life long friends I will have all my life.
Being educated in an all girls, catholic private academy, I have become part of a community which has allowed me to mature from a young girl, into a young respectful lady with the rest of my peers. School can only teach someone so much knowledge, however the wisdom my school has given me is truly a blessing that I am eternally grateful for. Now that school is officially over and summer has started, I am even more excited to throw myself even further into my community!! I have something special planned to come in a couple weeks!!!!!
My most special memory of all my 5 years at my high school has to be of my graduation liturgy. Despite all of the fantastic events to take place since grade 8, the ceremony held such beauty in many aspect, particularly close to my heart. It is school tradition for the graduates to sit on the stage where liturgy takes place and the grade 11’s to sit in the first few rows. Part way through the mass, each graduate receives a candle which will be given to a grade 11 as each pairs off one by one as the grade 11’s take the graduates place on stage. This symbolizes the graduates passing down the ‘light’ of God and of their true potential to shine as graduates in the following year. In return, each grade 11 hands their graduate a single rose to represent the beauty and virtue that Little Flower Academy has instilled in us, and how it will forever be apart of us as we embark on our journeys in years to come. This candle-rose ceremony has been a tradition my older sister, Bianca, and I have looked forward to since we first saw it. As she is only a year ahead of me, we would be matched off for the exchange. However, in my sisters graduating year, complications lead to her finishing her education elsewhere and we were never given the opportunity to fulfil our sisterly goal. This being said, after I exchanged my candle for a rose and walked off the stage, I found my big sister waiting with a rose in her hand! This experience has touched my heart in such a powerful way because my sisters have been such an important part of my life. To see their unconditional love and support in ways like this surpasses any other amazing memory I have had in high school as I will never forget it as long as I live.
Hmm what else….? Oh that’s right — I turned 18!!! Last tuesday I celebrated my 18th as my best birthday yet! Thank to my best friends, I not only had an amazing day on the beach after finishing my last two high school exams ever, but was also thrown a surprise birthday party!!
This mile stone has shone light on so many important aspects of life for me. There are always moments in life when you realize things in different extremities, and on my birthday, I felt the most immense love from my friends and family. Each of them had planned out the whole day to make it special for me, and it truly was! Since then, I have been overwhelmed with gratitude and love for those who make my life better by just being in it. Whether their role be big or small, each of my friends and family worked in ways to pull together a fun-filled day and I am so thankful!
Last but most certainly not least…..I GOT MY NATIONALS DRESS!!!! Yes, it finally happened after endless days of searching both online and in stores (all over BC!) to find the perfect dress. I could not possibly be any happier with both the dress and in store experience I had at Lisa’s Bridal Salon! Unlike many other stores, it only took 10 minutes to pick out the dresses I wished to try on. I wish I could just post a picture of my gown right now but it’s better as a surprise!! I honestly cannot wait for you all to see it! To walk across the stage at nationals in this dress with truly be a dream come true!!
Speaking of nationals….THATS IN 1 MONTH AND 3 DAYS!! The countdown to the biggest week of the year begins!!

One of my favorite elements of being one of the Miss Teenage Canada 2016 Delegates is the opportunity to elaborate on an issue I feel very strongly about. I am excited to formally introduce my platform to you on this site! I have already put up a brief video on my Facebook page touching on the topic, however would like to go deeper into what the issue is, why I feel strongly about this, and who is affected by Eating Disorders.
“What is an Eating Disorder?”….
Believe it or not, but a great population in North America are still unsure of how to answer this question due to the common misconception that an Eating Disorder is merely a weight insecurity. However, the reality is that this is a Mental Health issue which originates from deeper psychological damages, which surface through unusual eating patterns.
There are many forms in which eating behaviours shift and develop into a disorder, however there are three main conditions which are labeled to be the most damaging are bulimia, anorexia and binge eating.
Bulimia is a condition where one purges after eating, and thus results in dramatic weight loss and lack of nutrition. Current statistics show that in North America 25% of young women use binging and purging as a use of ‘weight control’. This is a dangerous and unhealthy habit that highly resembles bulimia and are early signs of this disorder.
Anorexia is another complex disorder that can be simply defined as “resisting to eat food”. This disorder is known as the most fatal mental illness as 4% of people with anorexia die from this disease. Both anorexia and bulimia are clinically diagnosed and can require severe medical attention due to lack of nutrition, and drastic muscle loss – which can result in organ failure in extreme cases!
The other side of the same spectrum is Binge Eating. This disorder results when one has excessive eating patterns and puts one’s health at risk. In most cases, binge eating needs medical treatment due to high levels of artery blockage and lack of essential nutritions.

…on the bright side…
There are medical facilities which help those in need of treatment!! Help used to be almost impossible to find, however in the past 20 years more and more programmes have been established in order to give the right patent care to those in need, without moving too far from home. For instance, The Looking Glass (http://www.lookingglassbc.ca) is a support system for individuals and families who have been affected by an Eating Disorder, and I am so happy to be working with them this year! 🙂 Additionally, the BC Children’s Hospital has an AMAZING Eating Disorder program, with both in and out-patient treatment! Additionally, there are many non-profit organizations which pledge their time and ethics into helping this cause. One of the many, is the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD). This organization works towards relieving people of their Eating Disorders through copious amounts of support, knowledge and hope! (www.anad.org)
Why I chose this as my platform…
The biggest reason as to why this is the issue I chose to support, is because of my personal connection to the issue. Without a doubt, my sisters have always been the closest people to me, and my world was turned upside-down when one of them was diagnosed with anorexia at the age of 12. At this time I was 11 and completely oblivious to the dangers to her dramatic weight loss – and so was my family. Leading up to this, I remember being alarmed every time she refused to eat popcorn during a movie, or snack on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with me, as theses used to be her favourite things to eat. Much alike, my parents started observing her refusal to eat and started becoming concerned. Our whole family became increasingly confused by Bianca’s condition as we never understood what an Eating Disorder really was.
After months of struggling with the issue and coming to terms with what was happening, my sister reluctantly joined the in-patient Eating Disorder program at the BC Children’s Hospital. There, she was surrounded by children as young as 10 who were suffering from anorexia and bulimia. Additionally, she spend ample time in therapy where the roots of her disease were constantly trying to be discovered. It is programs like these which give me hope and the drive to help those in similar situation, because within two months, my sister started to get better!
Next, my sister moved to the out-patient program which allowed her more time with my family and gave her more freedom in regards to eating choices. Bianca has often been referred to as one of the programs “Biggest Success Stories” because of how far she has come in so little time! – forever proud of you sis! <3
Looking back on this, not only was my sister hugely affected, but so was my family. This took us all by surprise and it had been a challenging journey to overcome. This experience left us all with a deeper understanding and appreciation of Mental Health, and thus I feel compelled to help correct the falsehoods standing over Eating Disorders, and do everything in my power to make as big of a difference as possible.
What I am doing about it….
I am pleased to announce that I am volunteering with The Looking Glass organization and help promote awareness towards Eating Disorders. There, I am educating people of all ages about eating disorders and how to identify them. Additionally, there is a general lack of knowledge on how to treat this issue, and therefore I am working on finding and promoting mental health facilities with eating disorder programs so families do not have to travel far from their hometowns to get the help they need.
